Imphal: Manipur BJP MLA Kh Ibomcha on Sunday said that the Centre has assured a delegation of state legislators that the current spell of President’s Rule in Manipur will not be extended beyond its present term.
Speaking to reporters at Imphal airport after returning from New Delhi, Ibomcha said the delegation’s visit was primarily to brief the central leadership about the prevailing political and security situation in the state.
“We went to apprise the central leadership of the current political scenario in Manipur — that was our main objective,” he said.
A group of 26 BJP MLAs had travelled to the national capital seeking meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
During their week-long stay, the legislators met BJP national general secretary B. L. Santosh and North East in-charge Sambit Patra.
Ibomcha said the delegation urged the party’s central leaders to expedite the peace process initiated by the Centre and pave the way for the formation of a popularly elected government in the state.
“The Centre has assured us that a popular government will be installed soon. The six-month extension of President’s Rule will not be prolonged any further,” he stated.
President’s Rule was first imposed in Manipur on February 13 and extended for another six months on August 13.
