Guwahati: A delegation from the Barak Democratic Front (BDF) visited the residence of the late artist Zubeen Garg in Guwahati to offer condolences to his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, and pay homage on behalf of the people of Barak Valley.

The delegation, led by BDF chief convener Pradip Dutta Roy, laid a floral tribute before a portrait of the artist and handed over a condolence letter to his wife.

The letter highlighted the deep shock felt across Assam, the Barak Valley, and the nation following Garg’s untimely demise.

It also noted that during this year’s Durga Puja, several pandals paid tribute to him, and people in Barak Valley remembered him through his songs.

The letter praised Garg for rising above regional and political divides, uniting people through his art.

Speaking to journalists, Pradip Dutta Roy recalled that Garg had spent part of his student life in Karimganj district and was fluent in the local Barak dialect and Bengali.

“He often called himself ‘half Bengali and half Assamese,’” Roy said, adding that his Assamese and Bengali songs enjoyed immense popularity in Barak Valley.

“The people of Barak are equally heartbroken by his sudden demise,” he said.

Roy also stressed the need to uncover the truth behind the artist’s death, urging that political confusion should not overshadow the circumstances.

He emphasised that Garg consistently championed humanity, harmony, and coexistence, transcending caste, religion, and regional divides.

“Setting aside communal and political differences and standing united would be the truest tribute to him,” Roy said.

BDF conveners Hrishikesh Dey and Nilanjana Chakraborty were also present during the visit. The information was released through a press statement by BDF convenor Debayan Deb.
