Aizawl: Mizoram’s oldest person, Lalneihsangi, died at a hospital in Aizawl due to age-related ailments, her family said. She was 108.
The centenarian died at Ebenezer Medical Centre in Aizawl around 7.55 pm on Saturday.
On September 13, Lalneihsangi was declared the oldest living person in Mizoram. The declaration was made based on a survey conducted by the Social Welfare Department.
The first among Mizos to work in a rehabilitation centre, Lalneihsangi turned 108 on April 14 this year.
Daughter of the first Corps Sergeant Major in Mizoram’s Salvation Army church Thangchhunga, Lalneihsangi was fondly called ‘Pi Buangi’ by locals.
Born and raised in Aizawl, Buangi had worked in Behala Girls Home in Kolkata, caring for women in distress and orphaned children.
She was awarded the prestigious ‘Women of Substance’ award in recognition of her contribution to society in 2022.

According to the Social Welfare Department’s records, there are over 70,000 elderly people in the state and the number is projected to touch 1 lakh by 2036.
