Imphal: Doctors, nurses, staff, and students of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal staged a protest on Monday demanding justice after a senior consultant was assaulted during a demonstration over a patient’s death.
The Teachers’ and Medical Officers’ Association (TAMOA) of RIMS suspended all hospital services, bringing emergency, outpatient, and routine operations to a halt.
Protesters called for the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack and sought assurances for a safe working environment.
The unrest followed the death of 35-year-old Chingshubam Ongbi Manju from Lilong Chajing on Sunday, who passed away due to complications from a surgical delivery.

Her death sparked protests within the hospital, during which a professor was assaulted and hospital property was reportedly vandalized by angry relatives and locals.
Expressing serious concern, the BJP’s Manipur unit condemned the assault on the doctor and the acts of vandalism.
The party alleged procedural lapses and mismanagement at RIMS and urged the Union Health Ministry to deploy a special team to conduct a thorough review of the hospital’s administration and functioning.
They stressed that immediate intervention is essential to restore order, accountability, and public confidence in the state’s premier medical institution.
