Shillong: With no contest in sight, Raksamgre legislator Limison D Sangma is poised to assume the role of Deputy Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. The election is scheduled for September 12.
The National People’s Party (NPP) MLA was the only one to submit nomination papers on Wednesday. His name was formally put forward by Cabinet Ministers Marcuise N Marak and AT Mondal.
Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma informed that the process would continue as planned, though the official declaration depends on whether any withdrawal is made before the deadline.
“The schedule provides a day for withdrawal. If there is none, the nomination stands, and the election will be concluded accordingly,” the Speaker said.

The vacancy arose after senior NPP leader Timothy D Shira, representing Resubelpara, stepped down from the Deputy Speaker’s post.
His resignation came in compliance with the party’s directions.
With Limison D Sangma emerging as the lone candidate, he is set to succeed Shira and take charge of the Assembly’s second-highest presiding office.
