New Delhi: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss several key issues concerning the state, including the creation of a separate administrative cadre for Meghalaya.
During the meeting on September 4, the Chief Minister requested that Meghalaya, which currently shares a joint cadre with Assam, be granted its own cadre to ensure greater administrative autonomy.
Sangma also advocated for the inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution to help preserve the indigenous languages.
Additionally, the Chief Minister raised the issue of implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state to safeguard the identity and interests of its people.
The proposal gains urgency given current tensions along international borders and evolving situations in neighbouring countries.
The discussion also included a proposal to name a road in New Delhi after the late P.A. Sangma, honouring him as a “tall leader and statesman.”
The chief minister described Sangma as “a national figure, a person who has always raised his voice for the Northeast, tribals and the minorities.”
