Guwahati: The Assam government on Saturday distributed scooters to over 9,700 community cadres under its ‘Sakhi Express’ initiative, aimed at strengthening self-help group (SHG) activities and promoting women’s empowerment in rural areas.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed over the two-wheelers at a function in Khanapara, urging ‘Jeevika Sakhis’, ‘Bank Sakhis’ and other community workers to continue driving a robust SHG ecosystem across the state.
“To empower them and ensure hassle-free, safe travel to remote areas, we have provided scooters to more than 9,700 community cadres,” Sarma said, adding that the cadres will also be covered under the Orunodoi scheme, which provides monthly financial assistance.
The chief minister described the cadres as the “backbone of SHGs”, stressing their vital role in sustaining rural livelihoods.

“This initiative is both a recognition of their dedication and a major step towards women’s empowerment,” he said.
The government will also provide Rs 500 per month for fuel and has urged all recipients to wear helmets for safety.
Alongside, Sarma launched the Livelihood Rural Express Scheme, which will supply 51 business vehicles to cluster-level federations to further enhance SHG operations.
