Shillong/Tura: The Meghalaya government celebrated National Sports Day on Friday by honouring 136 athletes and 22 coaches who showcased their talent at the 6th edition of the Meghalaya Games.

The event highlighted the state’s growing emphasis on sports development and youth engagement.

As part of the celebrations, cheques amounting to Rs. 45 lakh were handed over to 103 beneficiaries under the YESS Meghalaya scheme, a flagship initiative designed to support youth organisations, NGOs, and community groups in strengthening grassroots engagement.

Programmes were organised simultaneously in Shillong and Tura by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, reaffirming the government’s commitment to building a robust sporting ecosystem across the state.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Shakliar Warjri described National Sports Day as a reminder of Meghalaya’s resolve to promote fitness, inclusivity, and opportunities for the younger generation.

“Since 2018, we have made remarkable progress despite challenges. Our ambition is to nurture home-grown talent capable of representing India at the next Olympic Games,” Warjri said, while pointing to the successful conduct of the Meghalaya Games as evidence of a thriving sports culture.

The minister also unveiled Megha Fit Phase 1—a state-wide fitness initiative—with an initial allocation of over Rs. 20 lakh.

He further announced plans for sports hostels dedicated to nurturing emerging athletes, backed by a Rs. 100-crore investment.

“This is not expenditure but an investment in our youth and sporting future,” Warjri asserted.

The Tura event was attended by West Garo Hills Additional Deputy Commissioner Nipon Hajong, who spoke on the role of sports in promoting unity and well-being.

Athletes participating in the programme also took a pledge to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship.
