Shillong: Heipor Uni Bang, an educator from Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills, has earned national recognition for his outstanding contribution to education.
The principal and founder of K B Memorial Secondary School in Wapung has been selected as one of the 45 recipients of the prestigious National Teachers’ Award this year.
President Droupadi Murmu will present the award to Bang at a ceremony in New Delhi on Teachers’ Day, September 5. Out of the 45 awardees from across India, seven are from the Northeast.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma hailed the achievement, calling it a proud moment for Meghalaya.
“This recognition brings great pride to the state and reflects his unwavering dedication and impactful contribution to education,” Sangma said in a post on X.
Bang’s journey in education began in 2009 after completing his MSc in Botany.
In 2013, he established K B Memorial Secondary School with the aim of providing affordable English-medium education to children in a remote region.
The school charges just Rs. 200 per month and offers free education to students with disabilities.
In addition to his teaching career, Bang recently completed his PhD in environmental management in 2024.

Over the years, his efforts have earned him the District Teachers’ Award in 2021 and the State Teachers’ Award in 2024.
Khliehriat MLA Kyrmen Shylla and several community leaders congratulated him, describing him as a role model whose vision and service have transformed lives.
The National Teachers’ Award, instituted by the Ministry of Education, honours educators whose commitment and innovation have significantly improved the quality of school education and positively impacted students’ lives.
