Guwahati: Assam Police on Monday seized banned cough syrup worth Rs 3.4 crore from a vehicle and arrested two persons at the Churaibari check post in Sribhumi district along the Assam-Tripura border.
A total of 390 oil tins containing 30,420 bottles of codeine phosphate were seized from the vehicle intercepted at the Churaibari checkpost.
“@assampolice intercepted a massive drug haul at Churaibari check post, seizing 30,420 bottles of Codeine Phosphate worth Rs 3 crore. 2 drug peddlers are behind bars. Solid strike against the drug menace,” CM Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on X.
The vehicle, reportedly travelling from West Bengal and heading towards Agartala, was intercepted during a routine check.
Two persons, identified as Saminur Islam and Sheikh Alamin, from Kolkata, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
They are currently being interrogated to ascertain the wider network behind the smuggling attempt.

“This is one of the biggest hauls in recent times. We are investigating the matter further to track down the syndicate involved,” OC Milli said.
Police said seizures of this kind have become common along the Assam-Tripura border, a route often used to transport contraband from other states into the Northeast.
