Guwahati: The carcass of a one-horned rhinoceros was found in Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, officials said on Saturday.

Forest guards on patrol at the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary found the carcass near Tuplung Camp on Friday evening, they said.

According to the officials, the horn of the rhinoceros was intact.

The animal is suspected to have died of old age. The horn has been collected for safe custody.

The post-mortem report will ascertain the actual cause of the death, an official said.

The 38.85 sq-km Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary boasts the highest density of one-horned Rhinoceros in the country.

The sanctuary consists of the Rajamayong Reserve Forest and Pobitora Reserve Forest. The Rajamayong hills harbour several species, including Leopard, Capped Langur, Porcupine, Pangolin, etc.
