Imphal: In a move to strengthen defence capabilities through cutting-edge technology, the Assam Rifles has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Manipur, to advance the use of drones in security operations.
The agreement was formalised on Monday during a ceremony at Mantripukhri in Imphal West district.
The event included an exchange of documents and technical sessions focused on the indigenisation of drone systems, officials said.
As part of the collaboration, the institute launched an ‘Advanced Drone Training and Refresher Course’, which will cover drone flight operations, maintenance, and DGCA-certified training.
The programme is designed to enhance operational readiness by equipping personnel with advanced skills in unmanned aerial systems.
According to an official statement, the initiative underscores the critical role of defence-academia partnerships in promoting technological self-reliance.

“This collaboration brings together the operational expertise of the Assam Rifles and the technological innovation of IIIT Manipur, paving the way for a more resilient and future-ready security force,” the statement said.
The technical session conducted by IIIT faculty members highlighted the significance of indigenisation in achieving autonomy in defence technology.
Officials noted that drones are increasingly becoming essential tools for surveillance, tactical operations, and disaster response in the region.
