Northeast Clergy demand Bishop Michael Herenz’s removal amid rising turmoil

Dibrugarh: A major rift has surfaced within the Church of North India’s Northeast diocese, with 31 clergy members demanding the immediate removal of Bishop Michael Herenz.

The group has accused the Bishop of creating division, neglecting administrative duties, and engaging in financial irregularities.

In a memorandum submitted to the CNI Synod Moderator on August 13, the clergy warned that the diocese is “on the brink of disintegration” unless urgent action is taken.

They have sought the appointment of a Moderator’s Commissary to restore stability.

The memorandum outlines a series of allegations against Bishop Herenz, claiming his leadership has fractured congregations, eroded trust, and caused widespread unrest.

The clergy, who initially supported his appointment, now argue that his decisions have inflicted “irreparable damage” on both the spiritual and administrative fabric of the diocese.

Among the issues raised are alleged financial and property mismanagement, including the reported sale of church land and the sudden shutdown of St. Luke’s Hospital in Tinsukia.

The closure has impacted local healthcare, while nursing school staff have reportedly gone without salaries.

The memorandum also calls for the dissolution of the current Executive Committee of the 24th Diocesan Council, which the clergy claim operates without proper ratification.

“The circulated minutes were inaccurate, and despite corrections being sought, the final version was never approved,” the letter states.

With nearly 30 pastorates distancing themselves from Bishop Herenz’s leadership, the clergy have warned that the diocese faces a complete collapse without swift intervention.

Responding to the charges, Bishop Herenz dismissed them as “unsubstantiated,” alleging that the complaints are being driven by “terminated, disciplined, or retired presbyters.”

He asserted that the Synod is fully informed of the situation and that a fact-finding committee has already submitted its report.

“The Synod has not entertained these agitators because it is aware of the factual position. The diocese has documentary proof for every matter,” Bishop Herenz said in a statement.
