Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday attended a theatrical performance depicting the life and legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at the DGAR auditorium in Laitkor, Shillong.

The play, titled Rashtraputra, was organised by Rashtriya Jagriti Sansthan in collaboration with the P A Sangma Foundation.

Performed by the theatre group of the Netaji Institute of Skill Development, Rashtraputra seeks to bring to life the struggles and ideals of India’s national heroes through stagecraft.

The institute, apart from providing skill training, focuses on fostering patriotism and character-building among the youth.

James P K Sangma, representing the P A Sangma Foundation, said the organisation supports such initiatives because they strengthen nationalism and unity.

“It is important to not only remember our national heroes but also understand what they stood for — justice, equality and a free India for all,” he said.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma described the performance as significant, especially on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day.

“Plays can bring history to life, making it more engaging, particularly for the youth,” he said.

Urging young people to take inspiration from Netaji’s courage and determination, the chief minister added, “Our freedom is hard-earned. We must always remember the sacrifices of our leaders, because of whom we live in an independent nation today.”

After the performance, the chief minister felicitated the cast and crew of the play, which served as a tribute to Bose’s life while aiming to inspire patriotism and preserve India’s historical legacy.
