Jorhat: Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has achieved a significant breakthrough in agri-research with the development of a nutrient-rich, high-yielding purple rice variety named ‘Labanya’.

The variety has now been officially registered under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA), marking a milestone for the university’s scientists.

Developed to combine the health benefits of traditional black rice with the efficiency needed for modern farming and everyday use, ‘Labanya’ stands out for its commercial viability and strong market response.

According to AAU Public Relations Officer Ranjit Kumar Hout, the variety was introduced for commercialization even before its formal government registration — a strategic move to explore its market potential.

“Labanya has been sold through e-commerce platforms and has reached consumers in more than 18 states. Over 30% of customers have made repeat purchases, highlighting its growing popularity,” Hout said.

With a yield potential of 4.5–5 tonnes per hectare — significantly higher than that of conventional black rice — ‘Labanya’ offers major advantages for farmers.

It also has a lower glycemic index, emits a pleasant aroma when cooked, and has a relatively shorter cooking time, making it suitable for daily consumption.

Further enhancing its appeal, the rice has a high head rice recovery rate of 60% and contains 18% amylose, contributing to its superior milling and eating quality.

Rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, amino acids, and essential minerals, it offers a range of health benefits as well.

In addition to being a healthy staple, ‘Labanya’ is also ideal for value-added products such as gluten-free flour, baked goods, and traditional delicacies.

Unlike traditional black rice, which often suffers from low yields and long cooking times, ‘Labanya’ addresses these challenges while retaining the visual and nutritional benefits of pigmented rice.

AAU’s innovation is expected to support both farmers and entrepreneurs, enhancing the agro-economy while offering consumers a healthy, locally grown alternative.
