New Delhi: In a surprise development, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday evening, citing medical reasons. The resignation, effective immediately, has been submitted to President Droupadi Murmu.
In his letter to the President, Dhankhar said he was stepping down in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution, in order to prioritise his health and follow medical advice.
“It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented development during this significant period,” Dhankhar noted in his farewell message. He also expressed deep gratitude to President Murmu for her support and the cordial working relationship they shared during his tenure.
Acknowledging the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, Dhankhar said the Prime Minister’s cooperation had been invaluable and his time in office immensely instructive. He also thanked Members of Parliament for the trust and affection he received.
Calling it an honour to serve during a transformative era in the country’s history, Dhankhar said he was stepping away from office with pride in India’s global rise and optimism for its future.
“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” Dhankar said.
Dhankhar assumed office as the Vice President of India on August 11, 2022.
