Guwahati/Kokrajhar: Marking the 125th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder and freedom fighter Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Assam on Sunday unveiled the state’s tallest statue in his honour at Kokrajhar.
The inauguration was led by Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary in the presence of a large gathering of dignitaries and local residents.
The newly installed statue, now a prominent landmark in Kokrajhar, has been set up at Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Park and is expected to serve as a cultural and civic focal point for the region.
The project was made possible through a Rs. 10 lakh grant from the state government, supplemented by contributions from local leaders and community organisations.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Bijni MLA Ajay Roy, former Bilasipara MLA Ashok Singhi, Kokrajhar Municipal Board Chairperson Pratibha Brahma, and Park Committee President Santosh Tarafdar.
The event drew enthusiastic participation from local citizens and BJP party workers, highlighting the public’s connection to Mookerjee’s legacy.
Speaking at the event, Speaker Daimary paid tribute to Mookerjee’s role in shaping India’s nationalist vision and democratic foundations.
“This statue is not just a structure—it is a symbol of unwavering patriotism and the values that continue to define our nation,” Daimary said.
MLA Ajay Roy and former MLA Ashok Singhi lauded the collaborative spirit behind the initiative, thanking the government and civic bodies for their support.
Chairperson Pratibha Brahma described the statue as a “transformative addition” to Kokrajhar’s public identity and heritage.
Strategically located in the heart of Kokrajhar, the statue is expected to become a destination for civic gatherings, educational outreach, and historical reflection.

The adjoining park is also being envisioned as a space for public dialogue on India’s nationalist legacy, with the monument standing as a tribute to one of the country’s influential political thinkers.
With its towering presence and symbolic weight, the installation not only honours Shyama Prasad Mookerjee’s contributions but also reinforces Assam’s broader commitment to preserving the memory of key figures in India’s political and cultural journey.
