Meghalaya: Jaintia body seeks permanent SF-10 deployment in Lapangap village amidst border tensions

Jowai: The Jaintia Joint Action Committee Border Issue (JJACBI) has appealed to Meghalaya‘s Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, for the immediate and full deployment of Special Force-10 (SF-10) personnel in Lapangap village.

The request comes in response to escalating tensions and recurring disturbances reportedly caused by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and its affiliates, which have severely hampered agricultural activities in the border area.

In a letter, dated June 27, to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, the JJACBI stated, “These recurring disturbances have significantly obstructed agricultural activities, particularly during the crucial sowing and harvesting periods.”

“It remains a matter of deep concern that the Assam Police, in apparent coordination with the KAAC, continue to extend support to certain Karbi groups, often to the detriment of indigenous Pnar communities inhabiting Lapangap and the surrounding areas,” it said.

This “biased enforcement,” the letter states, has created a climate of insecurity, particularly for villagers working in their fields from dawn to dusk.

The JJACBI emphasized the growing threats, interference, and forceful occupation of community land, stressing the urgent need for the deployment of SF10 personnel to ensure peace and security in and around Lapangap Village.

The committee believes that a “neutral, disciplined, and professional security force” like the SF-10 would be instrumental in preventing intimidation, encroachment, and obstruction of agricultural activities, restoring and sustaining a sense of security among farmers and their families, averting potential communal tensions or escalations of conflict.

It also stated that the presence of security force would be instrumental in reinforcing public confidence in the impartiality of law enforcement agencies.

“We respectfully urge your esteemed office to treat this matter with the seriousness and urgency it warrants, and to take immediate steps to deploy SF10 forces—preferably on a rotational or continuous basis—during the sowing and harvesting seasons to safeguard the rights, lives, and livelihoods of the people of Lapangap village,” the letter stated.

The JJACBI expressed hope for prompt and favourable action from the Meghalaya government.
