Netflix India dropped the trailer of the upcoming release, Aap Jaisa Koi, starring R Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh on Wednesday. The film is about ageless romance, the union of different cultures, and a love that grows against patriarchy.
The trailer promises romance, the vibrancy of Indian culture, performance-oriented characters, and a story that has the potential to warm the cockles of your heart.
The Netflix film features Madhavan as Shrirenu Tripathi, a Sanskrit professor, and Shaikh as Madhu Bose.
The trailer shows a dash of patriarchy too in a typical middle-class Indian household when women are considered to be easy if they played cards, laughed loudly, loved passionately, and most importantly had a strong political opinion and never shied away when it came to discussing it.
Well, Fatima Sana Shaikh plays the role of a Bong girl from Kolkata who knows how to love fearlessly and that’s where the problem starts. She is often labelled as shameless.
The trailer begins with Shrirenu meeting Madhu Bose on a coffee date. Their first impressions go well, and they give their bond some time to see whether the relationship can lead to marriage.
However, Shritenu’s family has some objections to Madhu’s lifestyle, given their orthodox background.
“Sab kuch allow karenge lekin limit mein (We will allow everything but within limits),” is how Shritenu states his point, to which Madhu asks, “Why should you decide my limit?” They decide to cancel their wedding as more issues arise.
Tripathi is a man brought up in a rigid Jamshedpur-based family, led by patriarchs who hem and haw at a woman drinking or questioning her husband. Bose belongs to a rather independent family, and believes in speaking her mind, objecting to the systemic condition of women to follow and not lead.
“This film isn’t loud or dramatic – it’s patient, gentle, and deeply affecting. I was drawn to how it speaks to all people who have felt overlooked in life or love. ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ is a reminder that it’s never too late to start living on your own terms. It’s a story about vulnerability, rediscovery, and the idea that it’s never too late to open your heart,” Madhavan said.
