GUWAHATI: Drug trafficking has become a matter of grave concern for security forces in Arunachal Pradesh. In the last 15 days, drugs valued at Rs 10 lakh have been confiscated in separate police operations across two districts of the state.
On Monday night, acting on intelligence, police seized heroin worth Rs 5 lakh from a vehicle at a checkpoint near Darka Bridge in the Aalo police jurisdiction of West Siang district.
West Siang Superintendent of Police, Abhimanyu Poswal, speaking to the press on Tuesday, confirmed the arrest of the vehicle’s two occupants and the recovery of 10.54 gm of heroin.
He said that the accused were reportedly ferrying the narcotics from Likabali in Lower Siang to Aalo in West Siang. Following their arrest, a case was registered against the two under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Earlier, on September 2, in Tirap district, another individual was taken into custody after the police, acting on a tip-off, discovered heroin worth around Rs 5 lakh in his residence at Helipad Colony in Khonsa.
Tirap Superintendent of Police, Rahul Gupta, had disclosed that 10.71 grams of heroin, concealed in a green plastic soap case, were seized during the raid. The accused, originally from Mintong village in Longding district, had been residing in Khonsa.
In a significant drug bust in August, security forces, in a joint operation, confiscated 500 grams of heroin valued at Rs 17 lakh in Namsai district. Post the seizure, Namsai SP had revealed that the operation, executed by a combined team of police and CRPF personnel, led to the arrest of two drug traffickers at Bogamur Pahargaon village.
These incidents highlight the escalating challenge of drug trafficking in Arunachal Pradesh, pressing the need for enhanced vigilance and crackdowns.
