Guwahati: The Assam government is making extensive preparations to host lakhs of devotees at the revered Kamakhya Temple during this year’s Ambubachi Mela, which will take place from June 22 to 26.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the administration is fully geared up to ensure a smooth and secure experience for pilgrims visiting one of the state’s most significant spiritual gatherings.

Traditionally, the doors of the Kamakhya Temple are closed from the night of June 22 to mark the beginning of what is believed to be the annual menstrual cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, a deeply sacred observance tied to the goddess’s embodiment of feminine energy and fertility.

“The Ambubachi Mahayog in 2025 is scheduled from 22–26 June when the sacred Nilachal Hills will host lakhs of devotees, who will descend upon Kamrupa to celebrate Maa Kamakhya’s divine femininity,” Sarma wrote in a post on X.

In anticipation of the massive turnout, the government is coordinating efforts through 24 departments to manage the festival efficiently.

Sarma noted that accommodation facilities are being arranged for around 20,000 devotees, with dedicated camps being set up to handle the expected influx.

Additional camps for police personnel will also be operational starting June 20, ahead of the main event.

The chief minister also highlighted the medical preparedness for the mela, saying that special arrangements are being made for medical teams to be stationed in and around the temple complex, complete with doctors and necessary supplies.

To facilitate smoother access to the Nilachal Hills, the state is ensuring that ferry services on the Brahmaputra River—which flows just below the temple—will be adequately available.

To maintain the sanctity and ensure crowd control during the ritual period, Sarma announced that VIP and VVIP visits to the temple will not be permitted throughout the duration of the mela.

Additionally, general visitor access will be restricted from 8:30 pm on June 23, when the temple doors close for the core rituals.

Recognized as one of the largest religious gatherings in the Northeast, the Ambubachi Mela draws not only devotees but also tourists and spiritual seekers from across the country.

The entire temple premises become the focal point of devotion during this period.

Alongside the police, a large team of volunteers, private security personnel, and support staff will be deployed to ensure order and safety throughout the event.
