In a mega step towards digitalisation of physical home addresses, the Department of Posts has launched a new digital address system called DIGIPIN. This system allows for the precise location of home addresses, giving them a digital identity.
Traditional Postal Index Numbers (PIN)codes represent large areas, but the unique 10-character DIGIPIN helps accurately identify the exact location of an address.
The government has set up a dedicated website to help you find your DIGIPIN. By identifying your residence on the map via this website, you can determine your corresponding DIGIPIN.
DIGIPIN has been developed to make locating an address a lot easier, by dividing the entire country into a digital grid where each grid is representative of the latitude and longitude of your address.
This initiative aims to enable faster delivery of letters and parcels, support timely emergency services like ambulance dispatch, and more.
Online shoppers and logistics providers will also benefit from this system. By entering the DIGIPIN on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, deliveries can be made more efficiently. Scanning the DIGIPIN QR code allows users to find and navigate to the exact location via Google Maps.
DIGIPIN is a country-wide, open-source digital addressing system created through a joint effort by the Department of Posts, IIT Hyderabad, and NRSC under ISRO.
It segments the entire Indian landmass into grids measuring roughly 4 meters by 4 meters and assigns each of these blocks a distinct 10-character alphanumeric identifier derived from their precise geographic coordinates, including latitude and longitude.
Unlike conventional addresses that rely on details like neighborhood, street names, and house numbers, DIGIPIN uses a unique 10-character alphanumeric code that precisely maps to the geographic coordinates of a specific spot.
How to get your DIGIPIN
Visit https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home. Search for your location, click on it, and your DIGIPIN will appear at the bottom right of the screen.
This system can accurately determine your location within a 4-meter radius.
To determine your DIGIPIN, you’ll need a device equipped with GNSS capabilities to capture your precise latitude and longitude. These coordinates are then translated into a DIGIPIN code.
The Department of Posts is currently working on a web application that will allow users to easily retrieve the DIGIPIN for any location.

Additionally, they plan to release the programming code for the DIGIPIN system publicly, enabling anyone to generate and decode DIGIPIN codes.
DIGIPIN simply represents a specific geographic point and does not collect, reveal, or connect to any personal data associated with that location. Hence, privacy remains completely protected.
