Assam: Barak Valley residents express concern over FCI DM Sandeepan Borthakur’s transfer

Guwahati: In a major administrative reshuffle, Sandeepan Borthakur, Divisional Manager of the Food Corporation of India (FCI), Barak Valley, has been transferred following the successful completion of his tenure.

Since his joining in 2023, Borthakur has left a lasting impact on the functioning of the FCI in the region through his unwavering commitment to reform and transparency.

During his tenure, he took several proactive initiatives to streamline the Public Distribution System (PDS), which had long suffered from systemic inefficiencies. His focused approach in curbing pilferage, plugging supply chain loopholes, and bringing accountability into day-to-day operations significantly improved the credibility of the FCI in the Barak Valley.

His leadership was marked by decisive actions that restored public faith in the organization and transformed the way essential commodities were distributed across the Valley.

One of the most commendable aspects of his tenure was his strong collaboration with the District Administration to institutionalize the procurement of paddy from local farmers. This initiative not only ensured fair prices for agricultural produce but also brought long-overdue recognition and financial relief to the farming community.

The move was widely appreciated by stakeholders across the agricultural and administrative sectors and was seen as a step forward in achieving food security with local participation.

The transfer of Borthakur has sparked considerable concern and disappointment among residents and civic groups across the three districts of Barak Valley—Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi.

Many have expressed dismay over the departure of an officer whose dynamic leadership and reformative zeal brought visible change to a department that had previously been mired in controversies and public distrust.

It is pertinent to note that prior to his tenure, the FCI in Barak Valley had often found itself under public scrutiny for allegations of mismanagement and inefficiency.

Borthakur’s tenure marked a turning point, as he worked tirelessly to repair the institution’s image and improve its service delivery mechanisms. His ability to bring stakeholders together and drive systemic change has been widely recognized and appreciated.

Borthakur will now be succeeded by Narender Kumar, who assumes charge with immediate effect.

It remains to be seen whether the new leadership will carry forward the momentum of reform set in motion by his predecessor and uphold the standards of transparency, efficiency, and public service that Borthakur so diligently pursued.
