Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma paid his first official visit to Sanmer village in East Khasi Hills, where he distributed cricket kits to local teams and announced a series of developmental initiatives for the community.

The visit was hosted by the Sanmer Sports, Social, and Cultural Club, which organized the event to promote sports in the village.

Several local cricket teams, including those from Sanmer, Sawmer, Mawklot, Umlyngka, and a team named “½ Cricket Team,” received equipment as part of the chief minister’s support.

The idea for the initiative took shape after the chief minister had a chance encounter with young cricketers during a recent trek.

Inspired by their enthusiasm and aware of the limitations they face due to a lack of resources, Sangma pledged to assist — a promise that materialized through the distribution of cricket kits during Tuesday’s event.

In his address to the gathering, Sangma emphasized the role of sports and music in shaping the future of the state’s youth.

“Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to see the energy and passion in our youngsters,” he said, reaffirming his government’s commitment to creating platforms where young people can grow and thrive.

Beyond the sports initiative, the chief minister also announced several development measures for Sanmer village.

These include financial assistance for the Sanmer Sports and Cultural Club, the sanctioning of a public address system, and government support for the construction of a community hall and a water reservoir — infrastructure he said would benefit the entire community.

Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, Daniel Thangkhiew, also addressed the event, praising Sangma’s leadership and hands-on approach.

He highlighted the chief minister’s commitment to public welfare, citing his recent approval of funds for mission-run hospitals as a testament to his broader vision for Meghalaya.

The event saw participation from community elders, local leaders, members of the Dorbar Shnong Sanmer, and enthusiastic residents who welcomed the chief minister’s initiatives with optimism.
