17 newborn girls named ‘Sindoor’ in tribute to Indian Army’s operation

Kushinagar (UP): 17 families in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district have named their newborn daughters “Sindoor,” inspired by ‘Operation Sindoor’—India’s recent military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

Dr. R.K. Shahi, Principal of Kushinagar Medical College, confirmed that the girls were born on May 10 and 11.

“Seventeen newborns delivered over two days at the hospital were named ‘Sindoor’ by their families, a heartfelt tribute to the army’s decisive operation,” he said.

Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 by the Indian Army to dismantle terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, following the April 22 terrorist attack at Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, where 26 people—mostly tourists—lost their lives.

For many families, the name now symbolizes more than just the military operation—it reflects emotion, strength, and sacrifice.

Archana Shahi, one of the new mothers, explained her choice: “After the Pahalgam attack, many married women lost their husbands. ‘Operation Sindoor’ was a fitting response by the Army. For us, the word ‘Sindoor’ has become an emotion—one that carries deep meaning. Naming our daughter Sindoor is a way to honour that spirit.”

Her husband, Ajit Shahi, added, “We had already decided on the name before she was born. It’s more than a name—it’s a source of inspiration.”

Madan Gupta from Padrauna shared a similar sentiment. His daughter-in-law, Kajal Gupta, was deeply moved by India’s response to the terror attack and wanted to name her child Sindoor as a way to remember the sacrifice and bravery behind the operation.

“This way, we will not just remember what happened—we’ll celebrate this moment of national pride,” he said.

Vyasmuni, from Bhathahi Babu village, hopes the name will instill courage and duty in his daughter. “When she grows up, she’ll understand what it means to serve Mother India. The name will be a reminder of strength and sacrifice,” he said.

Priyanka Devi from Padrauna also named her daughter Sindoor in solidarity with the national sentiment, according to Dr. Shahi.
