Guwahati: The Assam government has announced a series of austerity measures and initiatives to support the families of soldiers from the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference marking the completion of four years of his government, Sarma said the state cabinet had resolved to suspend all non-essential government events, including seminars, conferences, workshops, and commemorative functions.

“In light of the current situation, we have decided to adopt financial restraint and focus our administrative efforts on supporting the armed forces and their families,” the chief minister stated.

As part of this initiative, district officials across Assam will, over the next seven days, be instructed to identify families of soldiers, form local support groups, and provide them with any assistance required.

“Our goal is to ensure that no soldier serving at the front has to worry about the wellbeing of their loved ones back home,” Sarma said.

He also noted the presence of Army and Air Force camps in Assam and neighbouring Northeastern states, where troop movement is currently underway.

To ensure smooth coordination, Sarma has directed all Deputy Commissioners to maintain close liaison with military officials.

“These steps are being taken not only as administrative measures but also as a symbolic expression of our collective respect and support for those defending the nation,” he added.
