Shillong: A Hindi professor at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) sustained minor injuries on Thursday evening after he was allegedly assaulted by the university’s student union president and several accomplices, according to police reports on Friday.
The incident occurred when Professor Alok Singh was in his office.
According to the police, the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) president Sandy Sohtun and five others reportedly locked the professor inside his chamber before attacking him with scissors.
East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police confirmed that an FIR has been lodged by the professor, and an official investigation is underway.
In his complaint, Professor Singh stated, “Around 4:45 pm on Thursday, the president of NEHUSU, along with five individuals, forcibly entered my office, locked me inside, and physically assaulted me. One of them held a pair of scissors to my neck and threatened to kill me.”
Singh has requested police intervention and protection, expressing concern for his safety on campus.
The incident has sparked outrage among the university’s faculty.
“We strongly condemn this attack and urge the police to take immediate and stern action,” said one of Singh’s colleagues.
The NEHU Teachers’ Association announced it would meet with Professor Singh to gather detailed information about the assault.
Attempts to reach the NEHUSU president for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone remained switched off.
