Assam Rifles honours 104-year-old Gallantry Awardee in Nagaland

Havildar (Hav) Mering AO, the 104 years old, stands as a living legend in the annals of Assam Rifles’ history.

GUWAHATI: The Assam Rifles extended their warm regards and sought the well-being of the oldest Gallantry award recipient in their ranks, Hav Mering AO, in the picturesque village of Sungratsu, Nagaland, recently.

Havildar (Hav) Mering AO, the 104 years old, stands as a living legend in the annals of Assam Rifles’ history. He holds the esteemed Shaurya Chakra, an honour bestowed upon him for his courageous actions in 1960. This prestigious award was presented to him by the then President of India, Rajendra Prasad.

On September 4, Brigadier Vikram Singh, the Commander of the 7 Sector, along with the Commandant of the 12 Assam Rifles, had the distinct privilege of meeting Hav Mering AO. During the visit, they also had the opportunity to interact with Hav Mering AO’s wife and other family members.

Brigadier Singh not only inquired about the well-being of the centenarian veteran but also presented him with a hearing aid as a token of their appreciation and care.

Meeting Hav Mering AO, the oldest Gallantry award recipient in the Assam Rifles, holds immense significance for every officer and member of this prestigious force, the oldest paramilitary force of the country said.

It also added that it was a moment of immense pride and honour for the Assam Rifles to connect with and pay tribute to the bravery and valour exhibited by individuals such as Hav Mering AO throughout their illustrious history.

The visit sheds light on the enduring bond between the force and its gallant veterans, demonstrating the Assam Rifles’ commitment to honouring and supporting those who have contributed significantly to its legacy.
