Kohima: In a significant step towards environmental conservation, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Urban Development Department, James T Khulu Tikhir, has issued a strict directive imposing a complete ban on several key single-use plastic (SUP) items within the Pungro subdivision in Nagaland‘s Kiphire district.
The ban is set to come into effect on May 1, 2025.
As per the order, the ban includes all single-use plastic carry bags, regardless of thickness or micron level, and plastic water and soft drink bottles below one litre in capacity.
The ban aims to reduce the environmental impact of these commonly discarded items, which often contribute to littering, drainage blockages, and harm to ecosystems.
“The restrictions apply to all individuals and entities, including educational institutions, government and private offices, commercial establishments such as shops, hotels, restaurants, religious organizations, industrial units, and banquet halls within the jurisdiction of the Pungro Town Council,” the order stated.
Residents and business establishments within Pungro are urged to take note of this directive and make necessary adjustments to comply with the new regulations before the May 1st deadline.
The directive carries stringent penalties for non-compliance. First-time offenders will be fined Rs 10,000, with the penalty escalating to Rs 20,000 for a second violation and potential permit cancellation for repeat offenders.
