Guwahati: The government of Assam has declared Assamese as the mandatory language for all official work across the state, with exceptions for three districts in the Barak Valley and five districts within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
The decision was formalised through an official notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Political Departments) Ajay Tewari.
As per the notification, government orders such as notifications, office memoranda, acts, rules, regulations, scheme guidelines, and transfer or posting orders will be issued in both Assamese and English.
In Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi districts of the Barak Valley, Bengali will also be utilized for official purposes alongside English.
Similarly, in the districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Udalguri, and Tamulpur within the BTR, the Bodo language will be used in addition to English.
The decision to implement this policy was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 4.
The move underscores the government’s efforts to promote the use of Assamese as the primary language for official work while accommodating the linguistic diversity of specific regions within the state.
