Gangtok: Tourism contributes approximately 10% of Sikkim’s gross state domestic product (GSDP), with immense potential for further growth, according to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

Highlighting the state’s focus on eco-tourism, cultural tourism, and community-driven models, Tamang emphasised the importance of empowering local economies.

“Our initiatives, such as the ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ and ‘Shishu Samriddhi Yojana,’ underline our commitment to future generations and climate action. Over 1,000 homestays across the state reflect our dedication to sustainable tourism,” he said.

The remarks were made during the inauguration of the International Youth Conclave for tourism development in Yangang, Namchi district.

The three-day event, hosted by the Yangang Tourism Development Committee and the Tourism Department, has drawn 176 participants from various countries to commemorate Sikkim’s 50th year of statehood.

Describing the conclave as a hub for collaboration and innovation, Tamang praised Sikkim’s achievements.

“As a small Himalayan state, Sikkim stands out as India’s green and organic jewel. We are a national model in environmental conservation, poverty reduction, women’s empowerment, and sustainable development,” he stated.

Tamang also noted the state’s remarkable progress, including a literacy rate exceeding 90% and an 85% GDP growth over the past five years.

Addressing the youth, the chief minister said, “You are at the forefront of this transformation. Through digital storytelling, entrepreneurship, and green initiatives, your creativity will shape the future of tourism. Let us seize this opportunity to connect cultures, create sustainable livelihoods, and position Sikkim as a global tourism leader.”
