Bajali (Assam): In preparation for the upcoming Panchayat Elections 2025, Bajali District Commissioner Mridul Kumar Das has directed all licensed firearm holders in the district to deposit their weapons at local police stations within three days.
The move comes as the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) takes effect, following a notification by the Assam State Election Commission.
To ensure public safety and a peaceful election process, all firearm licenses in Bajali district will be suspended for the duration of the elections, the DC announced.
Deposited firearms will remain in police custody until one week after the completion of vote counting.
Police station officers have been tasked with storing the firearms securely in their armouries and providing proper acknowledgment receipts to license holders.
Violators of the directive will face strict legal consequences under the Arms Act, 1959, and other applicable laws, the DC warned.

The order, issued under Section 17(3)(b) of the Arms Act and Arms Rules, 2016, is aimed at maintaining law and order during the election period.
All police stations in Bajali district have been instructed to enforce the order immediately.
