Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said the state government has sanctioned over Rs 15 crore for the construction of an indigenous cultural centre of the ‘Seng Khasi’.
The chief minister made the announcement while attending the Shad Suk Mynsiem festival of the ‘Seng Khasi’, an indigenous faith of the Khasi tribals, on Monday.
He said the indigenous cultural centre, especially to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the indigenous Khasi community, will be set up at Mawkhar in the city.
The new cultural centre will replace the existing structure, which was built in 1951.
Taking to X, CM Sangma wrote, “Witnessed the Shad Suk Mynsiem, a display of the rich Khasi culture through a thanksgiving dance, thanking the creator for a bountiful harvest and blessings through the year.”

“The Seng Khasi has played a significant role in preserving indigenous Khasi traditions and faith, happy to announce that the Government is sanctioning Rs 15.37 crore for the construction of an Indigenous Culture Centre of Seng Khasi,” he added.
He said the foundation stone of the Indigenous Cultural Centre is likely to be laid next month.
“The state government will finally be able to fulfil the long-pending demand of the Seng Khasi,” he said.
The chief minister had recently announced a cultural centre for the Karbis, to be built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, during his recent visit to a Karbi area in the Meghalaya-Assam border.
