New Delhi: Minister of State (MoS) for Defence Sanjay Seth on Wednesday flagged off an expedition team to Mt. Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain peak on the India-Nepal border.

The Mount Kangchenjunga Expedition is being organised by National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS), Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, under its ‘Har Shikhar Tiranga’ initiative.

This expedition team is undertaking the arduous task of raising the Tricolor on India’s highest mountain peak (8,586m), marking the true culmination of the ‘Har Shikhar Tiranga’ initiative.

The expedition team is being led by Col. Ranveer Singh Jamwal, Director of NIMAS, an accomplished mountaineer and adventurer with multiple records.

Having completed over 70 mountaineering expeditions, including three successful ascents of Mount Everest, he brings unparalleled expertise and leadership to this mission, solidifying his status as one of India’s most accomplished climbers.

The team comprises five highly skilled climbers and three support staff.

NIMAS has already successfully climbed the highest peaks of 27 states of India. Now, with the summit of Mt. Kangchenjunga, all 28 states will be covered.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, MoS Sanjay Seth lauded the efforts of NIMAS in shaping India’s adventure landscape. He emphasized the importance of such expeditions in fostering resilience, discipline, and a spirit of exploration among the youth.

Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, is known for its extreme weather conditions, technical difficulty, and avalanche risks.

Unlike Mt. Everest, which sees regular commercial expeditions, Kangchenjunga remains a true test of raw mountaineering skill, attempted only by the most experienced climbers.

With its world-class training facilities in mountaineering, cycling, rafting, paragliding and extreme adventure, NIMAS (National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports), based in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dirang, has emerged as a powerhouse of adventure sports in India.

NIMAS continues to set new landmarks every year, proving its commitment to pushing the boundaries of adventure.

In February 2025, Team NIMAS achieved a world record by becoming the first in history to raft the entire length of the Brahmaputra River within India—covering a staggering 1,040 km. This feat further established NIMAS as a leader in extreme adventure sports.

This expedition is not just about reaching the summit—it is about honoUring India’s mountaineering legacy, inspiring future generations, and celebrating the spirit of adventure that defines our nation.

The union minister also flagged off an expedition to Mount Everest, aimed at providing invaluable “first-hand Everest experience” to instructors, enabling them to train and inspire future generations of Indian mountaineers.
