New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s self-reliance in defence, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the purchase of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), valued at nearly Rs. 7,000 crore.

This marks a monumental step in modernising the Indian Army’s artillery capabilities while emphasising the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

The ATAGS, India’s first indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured 155 mm artillery gun, represents a technological breakthrough.

Its 52-calibre barrel enables extended firing ranges of up to 40 km, delivering higher lethality with increased explosive payloads.

The system incorporates automated deployment and target engagement features, reducing crew fatigue and enhancing operational efficiency.

This indigenous artillery system will replace the Army’s outdated 105 mm and 130 mm guns, offering superior firepower and strategic advantages, particularly along India’s western and northern borders.

Its deployment is expected to significantly enhance the operational readiness of the armed forces.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with private industry partners, the ATAGS reflects India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities.

Over 65% of its components are sourced domestically, including critical subsystems such as the barrel, muzzle brake, breech mechanism, and recoil system.

The system’s indigenously designed navigation tools, sensors, and muzzle velocity radar further reduce reliance on foreign imports.

The decision is expected to generate significant employment, with an estimated 20 lakh man-days created across various sectors.

Additionally, the ATAGS project strengthens India’s defence ecosystem, providing long-term product support, a robust supply chain, and seamless maintenance.

This initiative not only fortifies India’s defence infrastructure but also positions the country as a potential leader in global defence exports.

With minimal dependence on foreign components, the ATAGS symbolizes a milestone in India’s journey toward self-sufficiency in defence technology.
