Imphal: The Hmar and Zomi communities in Churachandpur district of Manipur have agreed to lift the shutdown imposed following recent clashes, officials announced on Tuesday.

This decision was reached during a joint meeting convened by the district administration to address the violence.

The apex bodies of the two tribes, the Hmar Inpui and the Zomi Council, resolved to work together to restore peace and normalcy in the area.

“In a joint decision, the Hmar Inpui and Zomi Council have agreed to end the shutdown and cease all activities disrupting normal life in Churachandpur district with immediate effect,” an official stated.

In a joint appeal, the two organizations urged the public to remain calm and refrain from actions that could further disrupt peace.

“We call upon everyone to maintain peace and harmony for the security and well-being of the community,” the appeal read.

The curfew was imposed on Monday as a precautionary measure after a Hmar tribal leader was assaulted on Sunday, sparking clashes between groups from the two communities.

Armed with batons, members of the Hmar and Zomi tribes were involved in violent confrontations and property vandalism, police said.

The violence in Churachandpur is part of a broader ethnic conflict that has plagued Manipur since May 2023, resulting in over 250 deaths and displacing thousands. The clashes primarily involve Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Centre imposed President’s rule in Manipur on February 13 after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned.

The state assembly, which has its tenure until 2027, remains under suspended animation.
