Guwahati: Assam Police have dismantled an inter-state motorcycle theft racket, arresting seven individuals and recovering 14 stolen motorcycles.
Among the arrested, six are from Manipur, and one hails from Assam’s Kamrup district, officials said on Monday.
The investigation began on March 11 after a complaint was lodged at Dispur police station regarding the theft of a motorbike.
Acting swiftly, police recovered the stolen bike, which led to the discovery of 13 more stolen motorcycles and the arrest of the accused over the past few days.
“We also seized a long-distance bus traveling between Guwahati and Imphal that was used to transport the stolen motorcycles,” a senior police officer stated.
Detailing the gang’s modus operandi, the officer explained that the suspects would travel to Guwahati by air, stay for 3-4 days, and steal motorcycles from various parts of the city.
The stolen vehicles were then transported to Manipur in a passenger bus.
Authorities suspect the stolen motorcycles were smuggled across the international border into Myanmar but are still verifying this link.
“Further investigations are underway to identify other members of the network and uncover the full extent of their operations,” the officer added.
