Guwahati: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized approximately 109kg of methamphetamine, valued at Rs 88 crore, in two coordinated operations across Manipur and Assam.
Four members of an international drug cartel have been apprehended, officials said on Sunday.
NCB officials said the illicit drugs, originating from Moreh in Manipur, a border town with Myanmar, were destined for Karimganj in Assam.
On March 13, NCB Imphal zone officers intercepted a truck near Lilong, Manipur, recovering 102.39kg of methamphetamine tablets concealed within the truck’s toolbox.
Two individuals were arrested at the scene, and a third, identified as the intended recipient, was apprehended later.
Simultaneously, NCB Guwahati zone officers intercepted an SUV near the Assam-Mizoram border near Silchar. A search of the vehicle revealed 7.48kg of methamphetamine hidden inside the spare tire. The vehicle’s occupant was arrested.
“The source of the contraband was Moreh, Manipur, and the suspected destination was Karimganj in Assam. Further investigation to apprehend other individuals involved in the case is ongoing,” stated a government release.
Senior NCB officials, including Director General Anurag Garg, are scheduled to convene in Imphal to oversee the investigation and address the influx of drugs from Myanmar.
