Kohima: The Nagaland Assembly has taken a significant step towards addressing pressing challenges by forming two new committees—one focused on combating climate change and the other dedicated to strengthening rural and urban local governance.
Speaker Sharingain Longkumer announced the initiatives, emphasising the Assembly’s commitment to bringing governance closer to the people.
“The formation of these committees reflects a global perspective and underscores the urgency of addressing these critical issues,” he said.
The Committee on Climate Change will oversee parliamentary efforts to mitigate the climate crisis.
It will evaluate proposed climate legislation, monitor the government’s adherence to climate commitments, and promote environmental improvements such as air and water quality enhancement in major rivers.
The committee will also champion initiatives like green budgeting, electric vehicle adoption, and sustainable farming practices.
The Committee on Urban Local Bodies and Nagaland Village Councils aims to enhance decentralization and local governance.

It will address challenges related to waste management, water supply, housing for the underprivileged, traffic regulation, and pollution in both urban and rural areas.
The committee will provide actionable recommendations to the government to address emerging issues within local bodies.
Speaker Longkumer expressed optimism about the committees’ potential impact, urging members to work diligently on the region’s critical concerns.
Additionally, the Speaker introduced 14 other financial and non-financial committees of the Assembly, as well as the panel of chairpersons for 2025-2026, reflecting the Assembly’s proactive governance approach.
