Kathmandu: Security measures were heightened at Tribhuvan International Airport on the outskirts of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, as pro-monarchy activists gathered to welcome former King Gyanendra Shah, who returned to the city after a domestic tour.

The former monarch arrived in Kathmandu from Pokhara following visits to several religious sites across the country.

Authorities deployed a significant number of security personnel at the airport’s main entrance and surrounding areas to prevent any potential disturbances.

Hundreds of supporters of Gyanendra Shah, along with activists from the pro-monarchy Rastriya Prajatantra Party, assembled near the airport.

Waving Nepal’s national flags and holding placards expressing support for the former king, they created a vibrant display of loyalty.

Pro-monarchist rallies have been taking place in various parts of Nepal, including Kathmandu and Pokhara, over the past few days.

Demonstrators have voiced opposition to the current government and called for the reinstatement of the monarchy, which was abolished in 2008 following the People’s Movement.

Adding to the momentum, Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala, who is also the granddaughter of Nepal’s first elected prime minister, B.P. Koirala, urged Nepalis via social media to gather at the airport to give the former king a grand reception.

The resurgence of pro-monarchist activities gained traction in February during Nepal’s Democracy Day.

In a message marking the occasion, former King Gyanendra stated, “The time has come for us to assume responsibility to protect the country and foster national unity.”

The heightened security reflects the government’s efforts to maintain order amid growing calls for the monarchy’s restoration, highlighting the deep political and cultural divisions within the country.
