Assam’s Anjan Sarma, Uttara Bwiswmuthiary & Basudeb Das honoured with ‘Sahitya Akademi Translation Award 2024’

Guwahati: Three writers from Assam—Anjan Sarma, Uttara Bwiswmuthiary, and Basudeb Das—have been conferred with the ‘Sahitya Akademi Translation Award 2024’ for their works in Assamese, Bodo, and Bengali.

Eminent writer Anjan Sarma has received recognition for his Assamese translation, ‘Prachin Kamarupar Itihas,’ of the book ‘Early History of Kamrupa’ (English).

In the Bodo language category, Uttara Bwiswmuthiary has received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation.

Bwiswmuthiary received the award for the translation of renowned Anuradha Sharma Pujaree’s Assamese novel ‘Kanchan’ into the Bodo language.

Basudev Das received the prestigious award for his Bengali translation of author Homen Borgohain’s book ‘Saudor Puteke Nao Meli Jai.’

Congratulating the winners of the Sahitya Akademi Translation prize, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “Your achievements will inspire the young generation of writers and translators.”

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya also extended his wishes to the winners.

Acharya lauded their literary contributions and acknowledged their role in enriching regional literature through their works.

The Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize is presented to the best translations in 24 languages recognised by Sahitya Akademi.

Uttara Bwiswmuthiary has left an indelible mark on Bodo literature, both as an author and a translator. Her prominent works include “Raikhwsa Fisa” (2006), “Haowasi” (2008), “Anthob” (2013), “Angroumwnda” (2009), and “Greetings Card” (2020).
