KOHIMA: Nagaland’s veteran politician and the oldest member of the current assembly, Noke Wangnao, passed away on Monday morning. He was 87. Wangnao breathed his last at a hospital in Chümoukedima following health complications.
Marking his immeasurable contributions to the state, the state government arranged a state funeral at Wangnao’s residence in Dimapur on Monday afternoon. The ceremony saw attendance from a host of dignitaries, including Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy CM Yanthungo Patton, Nagaland Legislative Assembly speaker Sharingain Longkumer, and NDPP president Chingwang Konyak, among others. Later, his remains were airlifted to Mon district headquarters for the final rites.
Expressing his grief over Wangnao’s passing, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio lauded the statesman in a heartfelt statement. “My dear friend stood by me through thick and thin, showcasing unwavering loyalty and dedication. His commitment was a testament to our deep bond.” Later, taking to social media, Rio added, “Paid my last respects to Shri Noke Wangnao. His sacrifices for Nagaland will be remembered for generations. May he rest in eternal peace.”
Embarking on his political journey in 1974, Wangnao was a fervent regionalist. Affectionately dubbed “Papa Noke”, he was recently elected from the Tapi assembly constituency in Mon district for the tenth time, representing the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. His illustrious political career witnessed victories in 1977, 1982, 1987, 1989, 1998, 2003, 2013, 2018, and 2023.
Over nearly five decades in public service, Wangnao held significant portfolios in the state government, including forests, social welfare, and the public works department. He was actively serving as an MLA and advisor for the Social Welfare department until his untimely demise.
