Agartala: Three top leaders of opposition CPI (M) from South Tripura district surrendered before the Belonia Court on Saturday following the Supreme Court’s directive.
The three CPI(M) leaders are district secretary Tapas Datta, Trilokesh Sinha, and divisional secretary of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) Belonia Babul Debnath.
The surrender comes in connection with an allegation of physical assault on Judge Ruhi Das Pal of Belonia Court in 2015.
The incident occurred on September 2, 2015, when the Left Trade Union had called for a bandh.
The three leaders, along with others, allegedly entered the court and assaulted Judge Ruhi Das Pal during picketing in support of a bandh called by the Left Front.
The then Belonia Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sudip Pal took suo motu cognizance of the attack and registered a case under Belonia Police Station (Case No. 113/15).
Following their initial arrest, the accused had obtained bail after filing a writ petition in the Supreme Court.
“The three Left leaders accused of physically assaulting Judge Ruhi Das Pal have finally surrendered in Belonia Court as per the Supreme Court’s directive given on February 18, 2025, last. This marks an important step in the legal proceedings,” government lawyer Kishore Majumdar said.
