Shillong: The swearing-in ceremony of 58 newly elected members of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) was held on Thursday in Meghalaya.
In KHADC, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah officiated the oath-taking ceremony for 29 members at the council’s hall in Shillong.
Meanwhile, in JHADC, the swearing-in ceremony was overseen by the West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner.
The Khasi Hills council welcomed four women members: Deiti Majaw (Laitumkhrah-Malki) and Aibandaplin L Nonglait (Mylliem) from the Voice of the People Party (VPP), and Grace Mary Kharpuri (Nongshken) and Rona Khymdeit (Nongpoh) from the National People’s Party (NPP).

A notable development is the election of 17 first-time representatives from the VPP, signalling a shift in the council’s dynamics.
Three sitting MLAs were also sworn into KHADC: Synshar Roy Kupar Lyngdoh of the United Democratic Party (UDP) representing Nongspung-Sohiong, Pius Marwein (Langrin) of UDP, and Sosthenes Sohtun (Jirang) of NPP.
In JHADC, Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat took the oath alongside 29 other members, including four former Chief Executive Members: Hambertus Nongtdu, Madonbai Rymbai, Andrew Shullai, and Moonlight Pariat.
The party-wise composition in JHADC saw the NPP leading with 14 members, followed by 8 from VPP, 3 each from UDP and Congress, and 1 Independent.
