Shillong: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has solidified its position as a dominant political force by winning a decisive majority in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections, claiming 17 out of 29 seats.

This victory marks a significant political shift in the region, establishing the VPP as a pivotal player in local governance.

The VPP’s triumph was marked by wins in key constituencies such as Mawhati, Umsning, and Nongkrem.

Prominent winners included Kynjoh Rangtong in Mawhati and Bill Clinton Wankhar in Sohryngkham.

Their success was bolstered by widespread support across the district, reflecting the party’s growing influence among voters.

The National People’s Party (NPP) managed to secure only four seats, including wins in Jirang and Nongshken, while the United Democratic Party (UDP) took five constituencies, with victories in Shella and Sohra.

Independent candidates Ricky Shullai and Lurshai Kharbani won in Laban-Mawprem and Rambrai-Jyrngam, respectively.

In a major political upheaval, both KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem of the NPP and former Deputy CEM Pynshngain N. Syiem of the Congress were unseated by VPP candidates, further cementing the party’s dominance in the council.

Meanwhile, the Congress faced a dismal performance, failing to secure any significant wins.

Similarly, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) struggled to make an impact, with lackluster results in constituencies like Langrin and Mawhati.

Following the landslide victory, the VPP announced its intention to lead the KHADC executive committee independently.

This decision underscores the party’s confidence in shaping the council’s policies and governance.
