Guwahati: Assam Police arrested Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), from his residence in Guwahati’s Ghoramara on Saturday morning.
As per reports, he was arrested by a police team comprising Panbazar Police and Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police.
According to sources, his arrest is linked to allegations of taking money in exchange for facilitating unfair means during the CBSE Class 12 Physics examination.
It is learned that a total of 274 students appeared for the Physics exam at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Assam’s Sribhumi (Karimganj) district, including 45 from the school and 214 from the ERD Group.
It is alleged that a financial arrangement was made to assist ERD Group students during the examination. However, the situation at the exam centre turned chaotic when the promised assistance was not delivered
The police and STF launched an investigation after complaints surfaced about the institution’s involvement in malpractice.

However, the police have not disclosed the exact reason why Hoque was arrested.
Hoque was detained last night and taken to Panbazar Police Station along with his wife. However, Hoque’s family has refrained from making any statements regarding the arrest.
As per reports, Hoque is being taken to Sribhumi for further investigation.
