Guwahati: In a pioneering move to eliminate rabies, JBF (Just Be Friendly), in partnership with Mission Rabies WVS and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), has officially started a free antirabies vaccination program for both free-roaming and dogs with the keepers.

The program kicked off early morning on February 20, with its first phase taking place in GMC Ward No. 1, near Khanamukh Bridge.

The initiative received strong support from local stakeholders on its first day, including the Ward 1 Councillor and local residents.

This marks the first phase in Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) areas, which will be followed by a pilot project in the districts of Kamrup, Sonitpur, and Majuli. Plans are in place to expand the project throughout Assam in the coming years.

The overarching goal of the program is to improve coordination between veterinary and public health departments to foster a more effective response to rabies.

In addition to the vaccination campaign, JBF, Mission Rabies WVS, GMC and Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department, Assam are also conducting awareness programs in schools, hospitals, and public spaces to spread vital information on rabies prevention.

The ‘Guwahati Metropolitan Area Rabies Project’ has set an ambitious target to vaccinate at least 70% of the city’s dog population, while simultaneously strengthening rabies surveillance through Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM).

To further facilitate community engagement, the project has also launched a dedicated hotline at 9706049585, enabling the public to report any suspected rabies cases.

Rabies, although 100% preventable, remains a significant public health issue.

This initiative represents a critical step toward achieving a rabies-free Assam, aligning with the global mission to eliminate rabies by 2030.
