Shillong: The Meghalaya government and the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) have strongly rejected the “fake university” allegations made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, demanding he provide evidence to support his claims.

Education Minister Rakkam Sangma emphasised that USTM is a legitimate state university, asserting, “We take education seriously in Meghalaya. If anyone is making serious allegations, we urge them to present proof.”

Chief Secretary DP Wahlang further affirmed that USTM is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC), reinforcing the university’s standing.

USTM issued a statement in response, strongly refuting the accusations.

“Since its inception in 2011, USTM has earned its statutory credentials and has been significantly contributing to higher education, research, and social welfare. These baseless allegations not only defame the university but also call into question the credibility of the UGC and other government accreditation bodies that have consistently recognized the quality of education at USTM,” the university’s public relations officer stated.

The university highlighted its achievements, including an “A” grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2021, and its ranking among the top 200 universities by the Union Ministry of Education for three consecutive years.

Additionally, USTM secured the 52nd position in the “Nature Index,” which measures the quality of research output.

It also emphasised its adherence to University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, with a rigorous PhD programme that includes multiple levels of external scrutiny.

“These achievements reflect our unwavering commitment to academic excellence, research, and innovation,” the statement continued.

“The accusations against us not only tarnish the reputation of a respected institution but also demoralise the thousands of students, faculty, and researchers working tirelessly to advance their fields.”

USTM also opened the door for a fact-based discussion and invited any authority to conduct an inquiry into the university’s operations.

“We remain committed to quality education and research and welcome any opportunity for cross-verification of our achievements and credentials.”

This controversy is the latest in a series of claims made by Sarma against USTM.

Last year, the Assam CM accused USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque of fraudulently obtaining an OBC certificate and claimed that the university’s construction activities were responsible for flooding in Guwahati.

Additionally, Sarma mandated that USTM graduates seeking jobs in Assam undergo additional examinations to prove their qualifications.
