New Delhi/Shillong: Meghalaya will host the 39th edition of the National Games in February or March 2027, as confirmed by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha to the state’s Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

As the host state for the next edition, Meghalaya will officially receive the IOA flag during the closing ceremony of the ongoing 38th National Games in Uttarakhand. T

he ceremony will take place in Haldwani on Friday.

“I am pleased to inform you that the IOA has awarded the hosting rights for the 39th National Games to Meghalaya, scheduled for February/March 2027,” Usha wrote in a letter to Sangma on Monday.

“As Meghalaya begins this exciting journey, I invite you to the closing ceremony of the 38th National Games in Haldwani, where the IOA flag will be formally handed over.”

In response, Sangma expressed his pride in the announcement, calling it a “huge honour” for Meghalaya to be chosen as the host state for the 2027 Games.

“Overjoyed to share that Meghalaya has been officially announced as the host for the 39th National Games!” he posted on ‘X’.

“I’m excited to join the closing ceremony in Uttarakhand to receive the IOA flag for the next edition of the Games.”

The ongoing National Games in Uttarakhand, which began on January 28, involve around 10,000 athletes and officials from 38 teams.

The Games are being held across seven cities, with Dehradun as the main venue, and additional venues including Haridwar, Nainital, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Shivpuri, and New Tehri.

The previous edition in Goa in 2023 saw competitions across five cities.

With the 38th edition marking the third National Games in just three years, this signals the revival of the multi-sport event after a long gap.

In the next five years, four National Games will be held, with Meghalaya’s turn in 2027.

Prior to the 2022 Goa edition—delayed due to infrastructure issues—Kerala last hosted the Games in 2015.
