IMPHAL: The government has begun the distribution of prefabricated temporary houses as a relief measure for those affected by the ongoing unrest in the state from Wednesday.
In an event held at Sajiwa Jail Complex, Chief Minister Biren Singh handed over the prefabricated temporary shelters, constructed by the Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd., to the displaced families of Imphal East district.
Khumanthem Diana Devi, the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East District, who issued the order commencing the process, was also present at the do.
“I’m pleased to share that the Govt of Manipur has successfully handed over the Temporary Shelter Home at Sajiwa Jail Complex to the first lot of displaced families today. In the upcoming weeks, we will also be inaugurating similar facilities in the other hill & valley districts,” wrote the Chief Minister in a popular micro-blogging website, post the event.
Aimed at rehabilitating the displaced individuals, Singh had previously announced the construction of approximately 4,000 prefabricated temporary homes across various districts. These homes are intended to provide immediate shelter to those displaced due to the unsettling events.
The construction of these temporary homes has been undertaken with utmost urgency in diverse districts and are expected to be completed within the upcoming month.
According to reports, around 50,650 individuals spanning various age groups and communities find themselves displaced in the ongoing Sectarian strife. Presently, they seek refuge in 350 camps established within schools, government buildings, and auditoriums. Furthermore, over 12,000 individuals hailing from the Kuki-Zo-Zomi-Chin community have sought sanctuary in the neighboring state of Mizoram.
Tragically, the escalation of ethnic unrest has resulted in a toll of at least 160 lives lost and over 6,000 individuals injured.
